That sounds like a really
fascinating premise! (/looked it up on Wikipedia) Reminds me of a certain part in the game Illusion of Gaia, which I just recently finished.
Since last posting, I re-read the first 3 volumes of Vampire Princess Miyu (Japanese). With the first volume, this manga really
hit the spot and resonated with me enormously. I think I understood some of the cultural notes being struck (e.g. the sense of loneliness and fulfilling a duty even when it is hard and painful) a lot more than when I first read the manga (back when I lived in Japan, I think, so over 7 years ago), and it was also fun to realize how much my reading speed improved since last time I read it.
I actually only own 5 volumes of this 10-volume series, however. When I first started re-reading, I was lamenting that I never got around to finding the rest of them (they're a bit rare). After reading through volume 3, though, I feel I understand why I never did--volume 3 is just a lot more mediocre than volume 1 was. But, I still feel like I'd like to finish reading this series someday, so maybe I will get digital copies on a manga reader site for the last 5.
