Oh, this should be fun! I'll have to think of a good anime or manga to recommend, LOL.

As far as the no VN thing, what about Kinetics? Those are VNs with no paths, just straight read-throughs and I know of some short ones. If not, I will think of some anime or manga....

Oh yes. Lots of nice Kinetic novels there, and free! I wouldn't recommend a paid one, since well....you'd have to buy it XD
