[Spring 2015] Season of Nostalgia

The final stretch to summer vacation begins. Unless you don't get any.

Much like the threads before it, this is a thread I created stole from blkmage for the discussion of new anime that will be airing on TV in Japan in the Spring 2015 season. Anime typically gets released and runs for a number of seasons. The year is divided up into four seasons: January to March is winter, April to June is spring, July to September is summer, and October to December is fall. Each season is approximately 13 weeks.

Here, we can talk about what shows look interesting, what we plan to watch, and generally get giddy and excited for things that we've been anticipating for a while.

Hmm... looks like I've got only a couple of for-sure watches, several maybes, and a few more will-check-out-the-manga-firsts this season, unless of course something surprises me. :) (Also, I'm currently reading the Arslan Senki manga, but there's really not that many chapters out ATM, so I'm not sure I want to dive into an anime adaptation of it this soon...)

As for the for-sure watches:

* Digimon Adventure tri. - Digimon Adventure 01 and 02 are huge nostalgia bombs for me (in fact, re-watching those two series was what spurred me to get into anime/manga for real a few years ago! <3 )-- plus, the character designs are by the same guy who did Tsuritama's! :thumb:

* And Kekkai Sensen, a.k.a. Blood Blockade Battlefront - An adaptation of a manga written by the creator of Trigun (Yasuhiro Nightow) + featuring the director of Kyousou Giga (TV) (Rie Matsumoto) + several of my favorite seiyuu? :wow!: There's no way I'm not watching this! :jump:
Saved by grace.

Yay! I was beginning to feel the terrible dearth of good anime in the winter season so keenly, I started watching old stuff. Mind you, some of it was good, but you guys have gotten me hooked on seeing a certain amount of new stuff each cour.

Okay, this concept sounds genuinely fresh and interesting. If they treat it with as much seriousness as Gunslinger Girl treated its issues, this will be the gem of the season.

Well, there weren't as many as I'd thought running through them, but I may watch some of the ones that sound a lot like other shows, too. I'll probably be watching 8 shows. Here's hoping there's one a week and no no-streams like last season's Ronja and Amagi Brilliant.

Digimon Adventure tri.: Wow, so nervous/excited about this one. Digimon Adventures was a big part of my childhood and the first anime I watched. I keep asking myself things like: Will the sequel measure up what I remember? Will I still love the characters? Whatever the outcome, I’m looking forward to returning to a familiar world. *goes ahead and sings the theme song with Mullet*

Arslan Senki: Look at that impressive pedigree~ FMA and LotGH? I think I’ll be watching this one. (That, and I’ve been on a ‘royalty on the run’ kick for the last year – might as well continue it.)

As always, I’m looking forward to seeing the reviews roll in. Might pick up a few more shows.

Wow, they're making a TV anime of Arslan? I'll have to let my family know about this one. We've all watched the OVAs, which were produced slowly and sporadically, but were actually quite good. This is one I'm going to pick up.

Also: Kyoukai no Rinne. Rumiko Takahashi = instant watch. We'll have to finish up the final season of Inu Yasha first though. I hope this doesn't quite get as long and drawn out.

I'll probably indulge in the new Nanoha, possibly against my better judgement.

I'm kind of interested in Plastic Memories. Though the setting being about intelligent robots made me pause because last time I went to a movie there were traliers for multiple American movies about robots where a character claimed that intellgent robots would lead to the end of human life. I don't expect a Japanese anime to hold such a dim view of AI though, and being that it's a subject I'm interested in, I'll have to check this one out.

The catchphrase of Ore Monogatari is "A shoujo manga where the main guy isn't a hottie." I might try this one. If only there were any shounen manga where the main girl isn't that hot.

Owari no Seraph might be good but it might be too depressing.

By the way, I think I found a mistake. The URL under Vampire Holmes leads to Triage X instead.

Will watch:

Arslan Senki - I too am worried about the fact that there're only a few chapters out. I guess it'll be ok if it's only 1 cour, and the manga itself is p slow paced.

Digimon Adventure tri. - The only Digimon I've seen was one Saterday morning marathon of Tamers which covered the last 10? 15? maybe more, episodes of the season. So I never saw the original, but I really can't say no to Uki Atsuya's character designs.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season - I wasn't as taken by the 1st season as I thought I'd be, but liked it enough to keep watching.

Kekkai Sensen - I have no idea what to expect except that I hope it will be good.

Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu - The character designs make me cry and apparently Kyon isn't wonderfully cynical and sarcastic in this version. But I can't not watch. The original show was one of my first anime loves, the first box-set I owned (if I remember right) and Sugita Tomokazu was one of the first seiyuu I was able to pick out in other shows. So yeah, I guess the nostalgia lies here for me this season.

Maybe:

Eikoku Ikke, Nihon o Taberu - If the art style doesn't bug me too much.

Grisaia no Meikyuu/Rakuen - Kaze, if one didn't finish the first season, how hard would it be to follow this one? And can the same level of fan service content be expected?

Hibike! Euphonium - really liked the music in the PV.

Kyoukai no Rinne - I will see the cat thing with the face in my nightmares.

Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku - It worked for Mekakucity Actors, sort of.

Ninja Slayer From Animation - idk, I have no reasons.

Ore Monogatari!! - This list is getting too long. Might just read the manga instead.

Owari no Seraph - Is the manga really popular? Since there seems to be a second season scheduled already, obviously split cour but still. I like all the shiny green.

Plastic Memories - Minus points for PV "not avaiblible in your region."

Punchline - The designs look great but I think fan-service is gonna be a factor.

Stuff I should watch the first (etc.) season of:

All of the Gintama!

Koukaku Kidoutai Arise: Alternative Architecture: I should catch up on all things GiTS sometime.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid

Nisekoi 2

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku

GeneD wrote:Grisaia no Meikyuu/Rakuen - Kaze, if one didn't finish the first season, how hard would it be to follow this one? And can the same level of fan service content be expected?

It actually wouldn't be too hard. Meikyuu is essentially MC's flashback and Rakuen is the only real plot of the entire story. The last few episodes of the first season were the most important for a certain (long) flashback, so whenever that becomes relevant, you'll be lost but it's not super important to understanding the basic gist of current events, which is very straightforward for the most part, aside from like political details that the anime will possibly gloss over anyway. Then there's minor stuff like Makina's arc explaining SPOILER: Highlight text to read: yes, she legitimately learns how to use a sniper rifle which would definitely raise questions otherwise even though it doesn't affect understanding the situation. So, obviously not perfectly understandable, but for a sequel, easier than you would expect.

Fan service...yeah the first season was pretty terrible with that. They did tone it down some later in the season but there was definitely still overdone scenes. To kind of be as fair as possible, Kajitsu is naturally more "fan service" orientated than Meikyuu/Rakuen, so with that in mind, I would expect a lot less compared to the first few eps, but still definitely some there. If I'm wrong, I'll be headdesking again at how terrible it is.

That said, there is a large theme of redemption at play here in that the girls all had their problems and now are working together towards a common goal. Rakuen uses a plot that requires suspension of disbelief to depict how these characters have changed. So without understanding the girls' backstories (and the first season did a terrible job anyway, so I'm not really advocating to watch it), I think it would really diminish appreciation of what's going on. But hey, there's still a good chunk of comedy and action that you may find enjoyable. As I mentioned, they'd have to try to make it as unwatchable as the first season, but I think there's plenty of room for them to still make it "average" bad.

Thanks for the info, Kaze. I dropped the first season mostly because of the annoying fan service and the last episode I watched being made up of random skit type sequences, but I was open to the option of picking it up again if I heard amazing things about it. As you know that didn't happen, so I never bothered. I guess if I end up watching it will probably mostly depend on the number of other things I pick and how must time I have.

So, I thought I might want to plot out the season, since I'm finishing off some of the shows I'm watching and am not sure what to start next.
By the way, does anyone have any info on the release schedules for the spring shows? When and where they'll be streaming?
I am still feeling the terrible dearth of good anime in the winter season keenly

Definitely Start (assuming I can find it):
Plastic Memories
Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken 2
Eikoku Ikke, Nihon o Taberu
Urawa no Usagi-chan

Probably:
Arslan Senki
Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku
Yamadakun to Nananin no Majo
Ameiro Cocoa

Maybe/Doubtful:
Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?

Crunchyroll's announced some of their titles here.

MAL usually also has a thread about simulcasts in their "News Discussion" section, I don't see one up for Spring yet, so give it a few days. The thread will usually then get updated as new simulcast announcements are released.

I'm really looking forward to the new season of Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks. The graphics are really great and the character development seems more in-depth than the original.

It is bad when you are a college student approaching finals and projects, have a backlog for the winter season, and have a severe interest in all these titles for the spring season:
1. Arslan Senki - Fullmetal Alchemist was awesome, and this plot sounds good.
2. Diamond no Ace: Second Season - If you guys don't know this by now, I love this show.
3. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season - Again, know who you are reading. I LOVE THE FATE SERIES BY UFOTABLE.
4. Kekkai Sensen - Everything MangaRocks! said.
5. Koukaku Kidoutai Arise: Alternative Architecture - I've heard this is amazing and haven't seen the movies... so yeah.
6. Kyoukai no Rinne - It's not Norogami or Kamisama Kiss, but if it's close to it, I think this could be a good one.
4. Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu - I'm not an obsessive Haruhi fan, but I really liked the movie that this seems to be spinning off of.
5. Nisekoi 2 - I know a lot of people had problems with this series, but for some reason, I somewhat liked it. Plus, it's Shaft, and I love most Shaft things.
6. Ore Monogatari!! - I've heard good things about this. Hopefully, it turns out to be a lovable, awkward romance like Nozaki.
7. Owari no Seraph - Not keen on vampires, but I've heard this might be the next big thing like Attack on Titan. Also, putting the vampire part aside, this might be an unusual/interesting watch. Wit is creating it, and they've had decent stuff so far in their short career.
8. Plastic Memories - Give me something similar (but please not identical) to Steins;Gate, and I will be happy.
9. Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love Revolutions - I really don't know why I am driven to watch this except for the fact that I need to know why this show needs another season after its lackluster second one. This really should be in my undecided group...
10. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku - If there is ANYTHING besides Fate that will most likely top my spring season, this will surely be it. I already think this will save me during finals week as a study break for it's great pessimistic outlook on life - makes finals seem just so much more positive. :P

Need more info/content knowledge to decide:
1. Digimon - Don't know if I should dive in yet...
2. Hibike! Euphonium - Depends if it is just cute girls doing cute things with instruments or actually a decent plot. Seems like there is some good drama, but you never know. Descriptions can be deceptive...
3. Punch Line - For some reason I really like this plot and the promo pictures, but there really is not enough info.
4. Shokugeki no Souma - Focus on the food, and I am fine. Become an ecchi, and I am furious.

Oops, I'm late to the party. Hmmmm...I think I've lost my ability to be excited about new anime because there are so many old ones I need to watch. It doesn't help that I have virtually no time for anything at all. Still, there are a couple that seem interesting enough.

Ameira Cocoa - Huh. Seems strange enough. Why do I feel like I recognize all these characters?
Arslan Senki - Oooooh, pretty! I'm actually really excited about this one. I haven't watched this style of anime since...well, FMA. I sense much depth in this one. I have a feeling I'm either going to cringe watching this anime and wonder why I'm watching it or absolutely adore it. Or both.
Denpa Kyoushi - Why do I find this interesting? Seriously, why? That's just weird.
Kyoukai no Rinne - Huh, looks interesting I suppose. Ooh, super hair colors and fancy outfits! Must watch.
Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu - What is this a spin-off of? Can I has it? For some reason I find this artwork strangely alluring. Well, I've come up with dumber reasons to pick up an anime.
Ninja Slayer from Animation - Anything with the word ninja in the title has to be good, right?
Owari no Seraph - Why do I constantly drag myself into post-apocalyptic anime? This can't be a good idea.
Vampire Holmes - Because vampire stories always end well. Admittedly, this looks like it might not be as cliche as it sounds.
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku - Sequel, what, no. What is this a sequel to and why? I am strangely drawn to this anime by the expression of utter apathy on that guy's face. Also, cynicism is great.

Why are there not links for Eikoku Ikke, Nihon o Taberu and Narudoma?

So, it's really ecchi. But it does in fact focus on the food. I assume the first episode alone should give you an idea of what I mean.

My real worry is that the (newer) source doesn't have much to go on yet, and there's no good place to end.
Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu - What is this a spin-off of?

Haruhi series spin off.

If you like cynicism, you'll probably love this series. It's fantastically cynical. Well, I would say it's more realistic, but I'm a cynic so I can't judge how much my view is skewed.

The MAL thread I mentioned is up: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1368266

I'm peeved that Funimation is getting a bunch of stuff I'm interested in since they hate non-US fans (and their player is grade-A rubbish). :/

If you'll excuse me, I'll be over in the corner, crying. Only a couple of the shows that interest me will be available to me.

I doubt those lists are complete. I expect more shows to be added in the next 1-2 weeks. If you're not US though, that's a different story :<

Not much out yet but so far
Shokugeki no Souma was about as ecchi as I expected. So, really, really bad and over the top. I'll take back what I said about trying the first episode since I forgot anime is naturally worse than manga. If you don't want ecchi, don't watch it. If you don't mind occasional, but very extreme, ecchi then give it a shot. It's ironically one of the better ongoing manga though. It does suspense pretty darn well, or about as well as you can reasonably ask of it. It's just those character reactions while being shown naked that it could really do without.

Oregairu s2 I don't have much to say. It's looking to be pretty much the same as s1. The new character designs will take a couple weeks to get used to, but I don't dislike them.

Nanoha Vivid meh. It's Vivid, so really nowhere as good as earlier seasons but not necessarily bad. Character designs are inconsistent in quality. I'll wait to see how good the animation of fight scenes are, but my expectations aren't high because it's Vivid.

Wow! Hulu has Plastic Memories, and it looks like it's there for free members.

[eta:]
Episode 1 was great. I wonder what SPOILER: Highlight text to read: she told Nina just before she turned her off. Maybe something she didn't want to put in her diary but wanted to tell someone? I wonder if we'll find out.

My friend really wants me to get into Food Wars. He warned me about its content and argues that it's good in spite of them, but some of the scenes in this episode were genuinely offensive. Suggestive of rape, even; and all they're actually doing is eating food. I don't know what to think. Not to mention this could lead me to sin if I don't guard my soul. I hope he's right and this... let's call it fan service... doesn't get worse.

Good news: Crunchyroll has Wish Upon the Pleiades, Hibike! Euphonium, Ore Monogatari, and Triage X.
Bad news: The title card for Triage X makes it clear that this show is this season's Rail Wars. Interesting premise, so much ecchi it can't be watched.

Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka? ep 1 - Not too bad. The fanservice is... endurable... and the premise is... okay... But the ED makes me wonder if he'll keep on chasing the high-level girl or end up with a girl he rescues. I don't foresee him ending up with his patron goddess, in any case. Will give this another episode or two.

Plastic Memories ep. 2 - Great episode. Not sure why they gave the androids SPOILER: Highlight text to read: the ability to get nosebleeds, but okay... Some are comparing this to Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, but I don't think that's appropriate. While there is a SPOILER: Highlight text to read: death flag, this show is very clear about it, that it's going to happen unless something totally unexpected takes place, like finding a way to overcome the limitation, whereas SwKnU waffled about it and just dropped hints that maybe it would happen and maybe it wouldn't... Anyway, I think the emotional conflicts in this are better done, at least so far. Redheaded girl is annoying me with how unfairly she's treating Tsukasa. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this show.

1st/2nd episode impressions

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works s2 (ep 1-2): Not much to say here since it just picks up straight from where s1 left off. I have some questions though - SPOILER: Highlight text to read: Am I right in thinking Caster's flashback is from the current War before she met severe-teacher-man and not from a previous War as I first though?
My other question is a bit more involved maybe. Am I supposed to be learning anything about the actual War/Holy Grail itself? I knew nothing about Fate/anything before this series, except the identity of Saber (I think) but right now the whole set-up feels less mysterious than just plain random. So there's this super McGuffin that a select group of people fight over every few years? every once in a while? and get to summon legendary warriors and all of this repeats because of reasons? Idk, like I said, it all seems rather random to me. Obviously if the answer is "just keep watching" that's fine too I guess. Maybe I'm just hoping that someone can confirm that there's a point to this.

"
Plastic Memories (ep 1-2): Possibly lowest on my list so far this season. I find the characters pretty cliche and the "tension" about SPOILER: Highlight text to read: Isla's lifespan is non-existent since it's 1. dead obvious, 2. silly that MC-kun hasn't though about it/mentioned it yet and 3. we're not given much reason yet to care about her. If we don't see what actually happens to a Giftia when it's lifespan's up soon, I'm not sure there's a lot keeping me watching.

Owari no Seraph (ep 1): Not bad if a little predictable. SPOILER: Highlight text to read: I can't help but wonder if it would've been a more interesting angle to swap the "roles" of the two main boys. The blond boy escapes to become the promised one and the dark-haired one stays behind and becomes some sort of brain-washed fighter for the vampires <- Making gross assumptions based on single promo image. I think that might have been more interesting based on their personalities. Clearly Dark-haired-kun is suffering badly from Eren Yeager Syndrome and Blond-kun is the much more resourceful one who gets things done. Sure that involved getting his family killed but still. Okay will stop rambling now and just keep watching.

Ore Monogatari!! (ep 1): Man was I incredibly pleasantly surprised by this. Loved the style of the opening animation and the heart and humour of Takeo kept me hooked. SPOILER: Highlight text to read: Might have actually cheered when he decked the train-creep. No a girls's skirt length has jack-all to do with you and isn't an invitation to do any freaking thing jerk Can't say I'm looking forward to the (potential) love triangle aspect but I'm hoping it won't put a damper on the greatness of the first episode.

Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu (ep 1-2): This is nostalgic and painful all rolled into one. Gah missed Kyon so much and he sounds the same but looks different and isn't cynical enough T_T *dies* Tsuruya seems to be the only character that's exactly the same as in the parent series. I don't know how long I can hold out before just giving up and re-watching Melancholy of HS instead. Or somehow tracking down the novels or something. Nagato is leagues more interesting to me as an emotionless AI observing and learning from humans than just another crippling-shy moe cutey.

Kekkai Sensen (ep 1-2): So watched that ED, um, *coughcough* a lot. Are cast dance parties a thing now? Can't say I disapprove, it helps that I like Unison Square Garden's music in general. The music overall was also really nice. The characters seems ok, a little bland so far but we don't know much about any of these people yet. The world and style of it (a bit Baccano, don't know if it's just because New York and the music) pulled me in though. I liked the imagination (albeit somewhat twisted) behind the designs of the non-human creatures we've seen so far. It's something that makes me appreciate the potential of anime vs live-action things. Also loved that villain guy in the 1st ep and his freaking out about the monkey, it was so over the top and a bit random and amusing. Also also Celty barista <3

Tried:
Punch Line (ep 1): Meh, there's nothing about it that appeals to me.

Shokugeki no Souma: Didn't bother past the peanut-butter squid part.
