Prospective Shelf-Space

Here's a curious thought. Given our purchasing habits, how much Manga do you own currently, and how much do you think you'll own when you have polished off, finished, or otherwise "Completed" your collection. Obviously doesn't take into account future tastes and volumes.

For example, say you collect Rurouni Kenshin, and only Rurouni Kenshin. You have the first 3 volumes of a 28 volume series. So you currently own 3 volumes, but assuming you buy the rest you'll eventually have all 28. Or again, if you collect FullMetal Alchemist, and only FullMetal Alchemist. You own 7 volumes of a still continuing series, which currently has 17 volumes; so you have 7 now, but you'd guess at owning 17+ volumes some day. And if you collect both Rurouni Kenshin and FullMetal Alchemist, you'll jump from 10 volumes in the present-tense to 45+ in the future. And don't include stagnant series you're not sure if you'll finish collecting. Clear enough?

Own today: 25 volumes
Own in the future: 75+ volumes

I know. Its just that I'd rather not waste money on something I'll end up hating. Download first, then if I like it, I'll buy it.

Currently, I own Dragonball (both DB and DBZ), Genshiken, Berserk, Hokuto no Ken, Yotsubato, Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece, Onizuka, Death Note, and a few oneshots I'm still looking for.

Same. Though if I don't care for it, I can usually tell rather soon and quit early.

And if I lived near a bookstore, I'd just read in the Manga section.

Let's see:

Full Metal Panic! - 9 volumes (complete)
Monster - 7/18 volumes
Azumanga Daioh - 4 volumes (complete)
Yotsubato - 3 so far
Oldboy - 1 volume

That's like 24 volumes. The only ones I plan on completing are Monster, Yotsubato, and when it comes out, 20th Century Boys. That's pretty much it! Small collection yes, but I don't read or watch that much nowadays anyway; let alone have the resources to have such a vast collection.

...and if everyone did this, the artists and publishers would go broke, although, I really shouldn't be one to talk.

I don't know about you, but reading scanlations is hard and annoying. It strains my eyes so I rarely do it. The exception being 20th Century Boys.

I occasionally download, that's it. Never scanlations.

Currently, I have 54. The series I've completed are Rurouni Kenshin, Magic Knight Rayearth I, Full Moon wo Sagashite, and Voices of a Distant Star. The three that I plan on finishing are Yotsuba&! (What, like, 5-7 volumes? I don't think it's been completed in Japan yet), FullMetal Alchemist (apparently, over 17 volumes in total), and Ultra Maniac (which is probably around the typical 7 volumes for a shoujo series). That comes to...

...About 79 volumes of manga, assuming I stopped there. XD

Since my four siblings all buy manga, we kind of have a general "store" of corporately owned manga. Right now, that collection is about 120 volumes. I expect it to be atleast 200 volumes.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.
