Signature Length Limit Enabled

Hi everyone,

As I'm sure you've all noticed, users with signatures longer than 250 pixels will probably notice them scrolling now. The staff has take then list of "modifications to the CAA system" and paired it down to some doable and some not. We're still in the process, but this one seemed like it would be quick and (mostly) easy. Actually, I haven't seen a good example of this before, so was kinda guessing how it would work out.

Anyway, please report bugs/errors/etc (either via pm, the "report post" button, or simply replying to this thread).

Thanks!

at first I thought my entire signature had just been cut...XD but I am really happy to see that it's just scrolling!!
I did take a few things out to save bandwidth though.

Thanks a bunch, Mith!

Darn, I just fail the 250 pixel cutoff. Oh well, scrolling is okay I guess. Will this be a permanent of temporary fix Mith? Sorry that I PMed you, I should of seen the announcement [unless I sent it first])

^_^ Thanks Mith!

I actually don't know if it's a problem with my computer or if I'm just unobservant, because I don't see any scrolling going on with sigs, they're just shorter now. It doesn't bother me, but just thought I'd point it out.

Yes! Mith, I love you!

*cough* In a manly, totally non-gay way, of course.

Well, I'm glad everyone likes. Anyway, I"m not sure how long this will last, or if it will even continue in it's current state. Consider it "temporary" for now.

Teehee this feature is so good I almost want to request for a shorter pixel cutoff. XD

But I won't.

It's looking great, OldMith!

It's supposed to go "Non-gay Man-to-man way!"

Cause it rhymes, 'ya know?

Anyway Mith. I actually do have a minor complaint I would like to address. I use the scroll-wheel on my mouse when browsing through threads, and when I see people with long signatures, my screen will stop moving in order to let the signature reach the bottom. Once that happens the screen continues scrolling again.

Not big of a deal, but the random stop is relatively annoying.

I am not sure if Mith can fix that, Ryan, that's just using the computer...

maybe scroll outside of the posting area?

That's what I've started doing. I just keep my mouse over where the names and avatars are; it eliminates that problem altogether.

same complaint here, but nothing that can't be solved. i actually like the new signature scrollbars. it's a brilliant idea.

Okay I'm going to go hit myself for not realizing the obvious. XD

I don't think sigs have to be longer than that anyway, but thanks Mith!

Those of you who know me know how hard it was for me to resist the urge to make this a 50 px solution, instead of a 200 px solution. ;)

As for the scroll wheel, the solution provided by other members is the accepted work around. Either use the "space/page down" key on the keyboard or place the cursor on the far left/right edges of the screen.

One question, now that we have signature scrolling, could we have signature images as well? :)

PostPosted: Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:41 pm

We're still trying to figure that one out. Since the problem is bandwidth, and since the browser will still have to download the images, the prognosis doesn't look good.

Does it still suck bandwidth if we host our own images?

I think so, SD because the site still has to download all those pictures...^^;

Is there any kind of workaround, Mith?

Not yet. Please be patient; this is on the list.

I was wondering, since some of us have a lot of code, if the sig edit window could be wider...

I would actually recommend using an external program (e.g., Window's Notepad or Mac's Text Edit) to build the code, then paste it in. You can pretty quickly do a "select-all, copy, paste" to move data back and forth.

So let me make sure I've got this right...

You're lazy, so I should do more work around here...? Is that about the size of it?
