NVIDIA screen tearing, hm? This may be of interest to you:

I haven't noticed screen tearing, or if I did, I didn't realize it was the NVIDIA proprietary drivers.

I'm not using NVIDIA drivers(old computer with integrated GPU), but that makes sense about a few other computers that I have used Linux on.
Thanks anyway

So do you play by a specific pattern or just by move?

Sometimes I try to experiment by trying what I think could be a good move, but I rarely ever make completely random moves.
Chess can be divided into 3 stages, the opening, the mid game and the end game.
When playing the opening there are many standard openings or combinations of them that are used most often by players (i.e. the spanish opening, queens gambit, kalashnikov) so if I knew about these openings better I would probably use them.
However when playing as white I almost always use the spanish opening.

In general you are supposed to fight for the middle squares and get the king to safety as quick as possible by casteling.

If I play seriously I could try and analyse several moves in advance that both players could make but that takes a lot of effort, so I usually just use my intuition. It sometimes happen that you recognize certain patterns in chess that you have encountered before which makes it possible for you to make quick but also good moves.

In my mind all pieces are important and I try to not loose any of them unless I can make an exchange. When one of my pieces are threatened I always count how many of my own pieces that are defending that certain piece. I also pay attention to the value of the piece being threatened and the value of the piece(s) attacking. Then queen is the most valuable piece and the pawn the least valuable.
