Many people might vote for ted cruz only because they dont like donald trump.
So what trump does is saying that he likes ted cruz very much and really wouldnt mind seeing him winning. And perhaps he will take the rethoric even further by implying that ted cruz is very much like himself, except just a tiny bit worse in some kind of aspect. So if trump likes ted cruz it will have the opposite effect in reality for anti-trump voters.
