So I just got back from the theater where I watched Inglorious Basterds. I honestly didn't have that much interest in it, but my mom wanted to see it, so I went with her.

Despite the fact that I didn't have much of an interest in it before I saw it, I ended up really liking the movie. Though to be honest, I almost felt like the Basterds ultimately didn't even need to be in it. They're almost a side-story to the main plot, about a Jewish girl who escaped from the house where her family was hiding and later murdered, and her plans for revenge on the Nazis.

I'd say about 70% of the movie was subtitled, since the characters were mostly speaking French and German (and a bit of Italian too), which of course didn't bother me at all, but I wonder how many people going in expecting a bloody gorefest were turned off by this.

I heard a lot of complaints about the movie being too long, that some scenes dragged. I didn't think there were any scenes that dragged, except for one, the part where Shoshanna is getting ready for the night of her revenge, with some really (in my opinion) unfitting music, but that's probably standard for Tarantino.

So anyway I really enjoyed it. I was surprised that the movie is literally nothing like the trailers made it look. And oh yeah, Christopher Waltz is absolutely amazing as Hans Landa of the SS.

Dude. Bowie's "Cat People" during Shosanna getting ready for her revenge was awesome. :|

The thing about the Basterds seeming kind of superfluous is two-fold...he's making a prequel that will go more into the Basterds themselves, but also, I think that was just Tarantino trying to ape the sort of disjointed plots of spaghetti westerns (this is going by my dad's insight, who has watched many spaghetti westerns, not my own, so if I've misunderstood something, then that's why) by giving us these characters who are really cool and nothing else. Little character development, no history...they're just there. We know why they're there, but we have no idea how they got there.

At least, that was my take on it. Tarantino has made some really complex films in the past, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that his doing it that way was intentional.

I love it, though. I've seen it three times since it came out. XD

I watched Return to Oz last night. I can see why people don't like it, but they're dumb. XD It's not supposed to be a sequel to the 1939 film. It's based on the books and therefore has a completely different feel. Overall I thought it was pretty good; there were some really creative visuals.

I came back from seeing Inglorious B-tards (if anyone can remember the last time I typed that XD) and it was interesting and well acted. The blood and gore aspect is a little over-the-top in my opinion but I would assume to the conditions of the era back then...it was kind of a bloody generation. It anyone agrees or disagrees with me about it, I welcome it.

The only thing that disturbed me was this...there were two children sitting in the front row watching this explicit movie...with their parents nowhere to be found...yeah not good.

Tarentino has an..."interesting"...way of presenting his thoughts to film.

Right, as one of Henry Selick's early works, Return to Oz was not his finest hour, but it definitely shows a lot of the potential seen in his later films. If anything, the atmosphere of Gothic ruin and disillusionment as applied to the stabilizing norm of a colorful and mostly safe fantasy world prevented it from becoming a classic. Also, Dorothy's new companions are cool, but don't have the charisma of the old bunch, so it's not as much fun.

It was... strange. It had a lot of classic horror elements but the characters didn't really allow it to capitalize on the nearly constant peril. Worst, though, was the really bizarre world mechanics which initially seem plausible but get strange and vaguely spiritual at the end. I would say that its current score on Rotten Tomatoes, 60%, is about fair.

Just got back from watching 9.

Personally, I didn't think that the movie made very much sense, especially the ending. The animation was great, the characters had a certain sense of charisma, although there was little character development, but the plot was just bizarre.

Also, I really, really, hope that in the future we know better than to make A.I with glowing red eyes.

I've started watching the second live-action Death Note movie, Death Note: The Last Name. Pretty sweet so far. They did a pretty good job of quickly summing up the events in the previous movie in the intro, then jumping right into the action. Light looks weird in a suit, I've discovered. I think it's because of his shaggy hair. Makes him just look strange somehow. L is awesome as ever; I was so glad they kept in the falling-off-the-chair part. And the part where he meets Misa-Misa.

King Kong (2005)

This was a crazy long movie. It had some incredible visuals but they were secondhand to the length and sheer slowness of the movie. I admit that I watched large portions of it on 2x speed. It also had a few unbelievably (literally) dramatic scenes that ruined the flow and made me laugh (like Ann walking through the mist and streetlight in NY to try to calm King Kong down).

The other night I watched Paprika and MirrorMask. Paprika was both fun and unsettling. MirrorMask had a lot of potential but left something to be desired. Nice visuals though.

I went and watched UP in the cinema today. I laughed, I cried (twice). Seriously, can Pixar do anything wrong?

Also I'm watching John Carpenter's The Thing on DVD tonight.

I was truly surprised at the RottenTomatoes rating for this movie (19%). The movie was by the book, yes, but I thought it a very solid Techno-Thriller. I guess the Techno parts were a bit unbelievable, but since when has Hollywood cared about properly representing technology?

The Dark Knight

I have seen this twice before (in the cinema), but I had forgotten how purely awesome this movie is. I picked up on all kinds of little nuances that I missed the first two times through the movie.

Recently my family has been watching nothing but chick flick/ family movies. So, thus far I've seen Kung-Fu Panda, which was amusing but not hilarious, Confessions of a Shopaholic, which was a good fluff movie, although the moving mannequins were very creepy, Twilight, which I saw with some friends who loved it, so for their sake I had to refrain from laughing (too much), and Enchanted, which was good, but not neccessarily great.

I am going through severe action-movie withdrawal right now.

Do I take it the chick flick/family movie marathon and the severe action-movie withdrawal are related? Far be it from me to presume I can suggest better action movies than your brother (I'm the one to go to for horror movie suggestions). However, should you find yourself in a position to see more chick flicks, see if you can leverage your way to watching some of Nora Ephron's work (i.e. Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, and Julie & Julia). She directs some very stylish films which, unlike many of her peers, avoid overloading on cuteness, fluffiness, frivolity, and a general tendency toward manufactured sentimentality. Consequently, the deep emotions that are in her films feel much more authentic, rich, and rewarding.

Yeah, with all the chick flicks my family has been watching, after a while, I just really want to watch something blow up. You're right though, Nora Ephron's movies are very good, as far as I've seen. Sleepless in Seattle was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, as well as You've Got Mail and I don't know how many times I've seen them. However, I've borrowed Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life from a friend and I need to watch it soon so I can return it to her. I'm hoping it's more intelligent than the last one, or if it isn't, at least be as hilariously over-the-top.

Yeah, I know! Why can't there be more explosions in chick flicks? All you'd have to do is equip the ladies with hand grenades, and ticket and DVD sales would go sky high. It would be simple enough to work into the script. "Sorry Jason, we can't be friends anymore, you hurt my feelings when you told me I should get more exercise. Now kneel down and beg for mercy, or eat shrapnel." "But I thought you liked Richard Simmons!" Male members of the audience wouldn't know whether to be delighted or terrified, and hand grenades would become the hottest new accessory. Nora Ephron is savvy about this stuff. She has Tom Hanks and his friend cry over a hand grenade in a war picture after accusing women of being too teary-eyed and sentimental with romance films. But in the meantime, I suppose we will have to content ourselves with explosions in action films of greater or lesser intelligence.

Jumper

Great potential was mostly squandered on supposed character development but also the occasional fight with 'oh cool' moments. Want to read the book now and forget large portions of pathetic attempt at romance in movie was sad because refused any thought of deeper then basic hedonism.
