Brief Description:
Plot Summary: After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other's happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.

The following contents are of the subbed version at their peaks:

Violence: There is plenty of blood in a good number of the fifty-one episodes, and temporarily, in a small number of the episodes, significant amounts of blood slowly pour out of bodies which have been stabbed in such areas as the stomach.

Nudity: There is one boy which has his entire nude backside exposed, and another scene depicts a character naked walking several steps as he gradually declines to infant size.

Language: The amount of language is at a rate of four or less expletives per episode, and at a PG level for that matter.

Religion: The two main characters are throughout the story trying to resurrect their deceased mother, and search for the Philosopher's stone to make the endeavor possible. Spoiler: However, after taking note of the ghastly effects of the Philosopher's stone after finding it, they choose not to put it into use.

Not for children under 14 due to the blood and darker themes.
Above that age range, however, an EXCELLENT series. The themes may be darker at times, but it's one of those series that actually makes you think about deeper things such as the value of human life and whether the means truly justify the end. I've heard the brotherhood series is better, but this series is gold in itself, whether it follows the manga or not. The characters are understandable and realistic, the animation is excellent, and overall a great watch. If you enjoy action with deeper meaning and mystery, this is certainly for you.

This is my second favorite anime. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Violence: I gave this a 5. There was a good amount of violence in this anime, but it wasn't too gory.

Nudity: I gave this a 2. It showed a 2 things. A naked boy from the side, in a non-sexual way. And a man waist up from the front once, and then it showed him from the back slightly lower, but that was in a non-provocative way also.

Theo: I gave this a 3. Although this show revolves around alchemy, it is simply a science, nothing magical at all about it. It has a form of the seven deadly sins in it, and the positive values throughout it wer great.

Other Negative: I gave this a 2. There was a small amount of mild language, and besides that there wasn't much.

July, 2011: Rose Faerie [ Already Rated ]

Violence: I gave it a 5. There is quite a bit of bloody violence. A character blows up people's brains frequently, though all you really see is blood. There is frequent fighting and most of the fights involve blood. There are also a few instances of body horror, as well.

Sex and Nudity: I gave it a 2 for a few instances of non-sexual partial nudity. There are also a few revealing outfits (a villain wears a dress that shows quite a bit of cleavage and Winry works in a sports bra from time to time).

Theological Themes: I gave it a 5. Edward is a self-proclaimed atheist, who claims that science can take the place of God. A corrupt church of a fantasy religion plays its part in the plot. The story is about alchemy and the forbidden art of bringing people back from the dead. However, resurrecting people is played as negative.

Problematic Themes: There is some PG level swearing. A character is seen smoking.

Overall: I enjoyed this show very much. The things they changed from the original story actually helped to create the overall tone. The comedy was well done. I actually thought this version was funnier than Brotherhood, which is more widely regarded as the more comedic of the two. I appreciated a lot of the changes, actually. The homunculi are much more interesting in this version and certain characters and situations felt a lot more developed. The beginning of Brotherhood is really rushed, but this fleshes out the Elric brother's backstory quite well.

The ending was an absolute trainwreck, though. There were a ton of loose ends and abandoned plot points. Stuff just started coming out of nowhere. They absolutely did Envy dirty, since his backstory had so much potential.

Despite its' flaws, this will always be a solid favorite of mine. Both versions are fantastic and both have aspects I favor.

The characters are great. We have our lovely pair of alchemist child soldiers, Edward and Alphonse. Edward is hotheaded and impulsive, while Alphonse is more reserved and outwardly caring. Honestly, I thought Alphonse was more developed in this version. The characters introduced earliest in Brotherhood and the manga also get a lot more screen time and development, such as Roy Mustang's crew and Winry (who I actually didn't care for in Brotherhood). I loved the Homunculi, though I thought the main villain was very, very lacking, despite having a lot of potential.

The music is quite nice. The theme songs bring me a lot of Nostalgia, and I liked the background music. The art is nice. My sister was surprised that it was 2003 animation.

I'm going to say this one is for teenagers and up. It isn't as bloody as Brotherhood, but it has a darker tone.

It's definitely for teenagers and up. It isn't as violent as Brotherhood, though it definitely has a darker tone.
